This morning I was looking on Facebook and came across a post from one of our local radio stations. So I clicked the link and here is what the article said..
Once again political correctness is treading on tradition and school pride. This past week the
Washington State Department of Education passed a resolution that urges districts to stop using Native American mascots. The good news is that the Board Of Education does not have the authority to force schools to make the change from native american mascots. The bad news is that 10 schools in the past decade have given up their mascots. There are about 50 schools that still have native american mascots including our Kamiakin Braves.
A Education Board member was quoted as saying “They are in the business of education students and we need to remove any barrier that will impede student success”.
The Oregon Board of Education voted in May to ban all native american mascots and schools there have 5 years to comply. There are about eight schools in Oregon that are effected.
You can read more about this story at The Tri City Herald
So I followed that link to read the other article. I’m not going to post the whole article, you can follow the link you want to read it, but I’m going to post part of what bothered me.
Washington’s resolution, which is similar to resolution passed by the board in 1993, was inspired by research by the American Psychological Association citing the adverse effects of Native American mascots on students.
ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME!?!
I understand and respect that some Native American tribes don’t want schools using things like “Braves” or “Chefs” as mascots but to say that having a Native American mascot can cause the students to not learn as well seems like a load of crap to me. And as for the tribes not liking it, take a look at this comment that was left on the Facebook post.
This is the stupidest thing I have heard of. It keeps coming up but if they go back into the history of the school they will find that the name was given with a blessing from the Native American Indian tribe. How do you un-accept a blessing already accepted?
I vaguely remember hearing this story when I went to school there. If it is true then why should we have to change our mascot. Not only that, but if schools have to change their mascots then shouldn’t professional sports teams have to change theirs too?
